Conservative estimates suggest that 29% of people
with mental health problems have concurrent substance abuse
issues/disorders. Other studies claim it’s higher – 40% - 60%.
Having two disorders at the same time increases the incidence of
problems, such as homelessness, hospitalization, incarceration and
suicide.
CMHA/Peel has been given funding to provide
concurrent disorders training and consultation to agencies in the
Region of Peel/Central West LHIN (Local Health Integration
Network) who serve clients with concurrent disorders. The training
and consultation is provided by our Concurrent Disorders
Resource Network.
Training includes two-day ASIST (Applied Suicide
Intervention Skills Training) workshops; a one-day NVCI
(Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) training; and five-day
Concurrent Disorders training. Network members may also attend 10
three-hour Solution Sessions that include case
consultation, networking, information sharing and educational
opportunities.
